On January 31, 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The destruction of the Mapes put an end to years of efforts to preserve the building via lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots action. The National Trust for Historic Preservation took up the cause of the Mapes, and challenged the destruction in a suit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the efficacy and justification of demolishing the Mapes is debatable, one thing that is not is the glorious history of the hotel. It was built in’47, and signaled the start of the modern era of casino gambling. Despite the notoriety of Bugsy Siegel and the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was the Mapes that became the first building in the nation to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under one roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of ‘The Misfits’. Joseph McCarthy, America’s famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn’t have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

During the ‘Rat Pack’ era of the 50’s and 60’s it became along with the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The 11th floor, window walled Sky Room Lounge hosted performances by a roster of entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Milton Berle and Mae West. Downtown Reno struggled during the’60’s and 70’s but the Mapes continued to prosper. The hotel finally closed in’82, due to financial problems experienced by the Mapes Family brought about by their other Northern Nevada casino holdings.

Reno has yet to experience the sort of growth that has been seen in Southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands–perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state–is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The city argued that the land on which the Mapes stood was necessary for their redevelopment efforts–a somewhat absurd position given the realities of downtown Reno and the lack of any real development on the property since the demolition. Despite receiving a number of viable concepts for the Mapes Building, the City Redevelopment Authority rejected all of them and the Mapes was destined for demolition.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The property has been improved and the rink is now permanent which, while not in itself a bad use for the land, further calls into question the efficacy of demolishing the structure. It would appear that the city had no clue what to do with the land, but for whatever reason wanted the building brought down. This has led to all sorts of conspiracy theories, from the City Development Agency having financial incentive to raze the hotel to rumors that the building was haunted and was destroyed to keep the Reno area from being overrun with paranormal activity. Whatever the reason for the decision, the city of Reno has lost a beautiful art deco treasure that played a significant part in the economic growth of the state.

A simple rule to think of when you’re looking for a hotel to stay at in Rome, is to ask yourself what sort of things you’re actually looking for from the place you’ll be staying in. Although this sounds blindingly obvious, it’s amazing how many times people forget this when looking for a hotel.

So how do we go about answering this question? What we need to do is develop a list of features that can be found in the Rome hotels that you discover in your online search. Once we have this list, we’ll be much better able to select a hotel that best matches what we’re ideally looking for.

The first thing to look at, of course, is why it is you want to stay in a hotel at all. Generally, this will be because you’re going on holiday or for work purposes. There are other reasons, such as perhaps visiting people or attending a function, but the most likely scenario is you’ll be there for a break or for work.

Next, you need to think of where it actually is in Rome that you want to be staying. For instance, do you want to be near to the sights, the nightlife or the town centre, or is it essential that you stay near to where you’ll be working, or perhaps there are other factors that will come into play.

Now you know this, you’ll want to decide on the kind of facilities that the hotel should have. It’s almost certain that every modern hotel will come with an en suite bathroom, though you can potentially save some cash if this isn’t necessary for you. And you should think whether you want the place to have a bar or somewhere you can eat.

Several years ago, it would have been quite odd for hotels to have facilities such as a gym or a swimming pool. But nowadays, you can find quite a few that offer these and more. And if you want to be using the internet while you’re away, you might want to check if your hotel has a wifi connection.

We said you could potentially save money with a hotel with fewer facilities, and obviously this could be a big factor in your choice. There’s no point going after a luxurious hotel if you can’t afford to pay the necessary amount of cash to stay there. In Rome, there are many hotels that are available that will suit any pocket, so you should definitely find what you’re after.

Now you have all this info to hand – location, facilities etc. – you should look into each of the hotels that are available in Rome that meet up with your requirements. You’ll probably find several that tick all the boxes, so you now simply need to choose your favourite.

Finally, of course, you’ll need to include the dates of your stay. Many hotels will not be available for all the days you want, so you’ll want to check against each of them to ensure you can get the hotel you desire when it comes to booking online.

Australia, specifically the Tropical North Queensland region, has many many incredible things to offer. Although it is nice to spend your days walking through the rainforests and discovering all the wonderful nature it has to offer, you will also come into contact with numerous flies.

Warding off flies might have you doing the Great Australian Salute, the action of brushing your hand across your face to shoo away the flies. So commonly found in and around the Tropical North Queensland region and throughout the Australian continent they are often referred jokingly to as the Australian National Bird.

When planning to spend a fair amount of time in the great outdoors, especially while attending picnics and barbecues and such, you will want to make sure to take along the bug repellent and be sure to bring along plenty of aluminum foil or saran wrap to cover up food items. Flies may also be referred to as little blitters and you will see most places have fly paper as well as fly swatters readily available.

Many Stockmen have found while working in the Bush that tying a cork from the brim of their hat and letting it bounce back and forth helps to deter flies from landing on them while keeping their hands free to do their work. This neat idea has also lead to an expression in the region. When referring to a person who is smart people will say that there are no flies on him.

While flies could be extremely bothersome and many individuals do not enjoy when they shoot down upon food, they actually do not present any major menace to man or other creatures. Some of the unusual breeds of flies in Australia do bite, particularly those encountered in swamplands, called sand flies as well as those encountered upon farms, called horse flies, however no damage will surface from these type of bites and a bit of eucalyptus oil will take the sting right out from a fly bite. Regrettably dealings with these little blitters is simply a part of the Australian experience and essentially needs to be stomached.

In order to find the perfect value in a cairns accommodation, go to tropicalnorthqueensland.com.au, right away. We provide the perfect selection in cairns hotels that you can find.

Mendocino is probably one of the best vacation destinations in the state of California. In fact, it can be in the country’s top tourist spots also. The place is perched on scenic bluffs. These bluffs offer a great view of the Pacific Ocean and Mendocino Bay, both providing a refreshing sea breeze.

People who wish to escape from the busy life in the bustling city; this is the best get-away. It has many wonderful inns and hotels whose accommodation and services can add to the town’s features and rustic beauty. Mendocino hotels are famous not just for its location but also for its elegant and classic architecture, putting a touch of history to the place.

However, you may find the place a bit wanting in terms of modern amenities but this is not what you came for. You will not see any mall or supermarket in the town but it has enough number of nearby restaurants, stores, shops and sports facilities that can serve your needs.

Aside from the hotels, many of the inns can provide Mendocino bed and breakfast for those who prefer simple accommodations. After all, going to town known for its natural beauty, people usually want only a room where they can take a rest after doing the many activities possible in the town. These would include hiking, mountain biking, kayaking or simply gazing out into the ocean.

To choose a one of the Mendocino hotels that is worth staying at, asking about its exact position is important. The coast is a spectacle in the late afternoon when the Pacific sun begins to set. A hotel in this location is certainly a good choice.

Inns and lodges that have easy and quaint designs offer Mendocino bed and breakfast. The laidback atmosphere can be the escape you want. Some of them may not offer many conveniences though. However, if you want to really save on your budget, you can pick one that is cheap but decent enough.

Nature-lovers may opt for accommodations that are just near to Mendocino’s natural wonders. The inns and hotels situated near the natural park, forest reserves, and scenic islands are can provide them with it. These inns and hotels can even facilitate the outdoor activities they want to enjoy. It is actually having the wonders of the mountains, forests and the sea all rolled in one setting.

To search for more information about the hotels and inns in Mendocino, one can visit the web sites of these businesses. If not, contacting a travel and tour agency can also help. If a choice is made, one can immediately book a reservation online also.

Hope Simmons travels the United States visiting the countries best vacation destinations. Most recently he visited mendocino hotels and mendocino bed and breakfast.

Are you paying too much for your hotel room? The short answer is, most likely. If you are like most travelers and only shop at one of the leading online travel sites you are probably paying too much.

Are you paying too much for your hotel room? The short answer is, most likely. If you are like most travelers and only shop at one of the leading online travel sites you are probably paying too much.

Yes, its true that Expedia or Travelocity may offer the best rate for a specific hotel in a specific destination. However, if you do not comparison shop, you wont know if you are getting the best rate possible. Travelocity and Expedia can be very valuable, but if you were buying a car would you only go to one dealership? Let me answer that for you. No, you wouldnt and thats because you know you save money when you create competition. The same holds true for hotel rooms.

Visiting only one travel booking site before buying travel products is typical behavior. Travelers become loyal to that one site or may not know that other options exist. However, recent data released by hotelicopter.com shows that if you book your Thanksgiving holiday hotels at one of those sites, you will pay on average 23% more than if you comparison shop through a hotel search engine.

What does this mean to your wallet? According to hotelicopter.com, if you are planning to spend 4 nights in a NYC hotel this Thanksgiving and only seek rates through one leading online travel booking site, you will pay on average $62 more per night ($248 for a 4 night stay) than what you would find by comparing rates across up to 30 different sites.

Here are some other savings you could experience for the upcoming Thanksgiving week:

- Los Angeles hotels: save $37 per night (30%)

- San Francisco hotels: save $32 per night (28%)

- New York hotels: save $62 per night (23%)

- Chicago hotels: save $39 per night (22%)

hotelicopter found the same pattern holds true for Christmas break as well. In NYC alone, you could save, on average, a whopping $86 per night (36%!) off the rates found on one leading booking site. Thats almost a $350 savings for a four night stay. Whats the moral to this story? Comparison shopping for hotels can add up to big savings.

London, as a vacation destination, is very hard to beat. It is the most popular city in England for city breaks and longer vacations. Most people travel there to take in the wonderful sights of the capital city of England and some endeavor to see the British Royal Family (with the Queen being the top of everyone’s list). Many people head to London to take advantage of the finest shopping in the land.

London, Paris, New York, how many times have you seen these three cities mentioned together? It is most likely that you will have seen them together on a bottle of fine perfume or a luxury cosmetic product. The reason is that these three cities are the top three shopping cities of the world. You will be hard pressed to walk through any of London’s top shopping districts without seeing the flagship store of at least one huge retail chain.

London is amazing, it has virtually anything for sale all you have to do is go look. Places such as Knightsbridge, New Bond Street and Oxford Street feature extremely well known department stores and the likes. Usually shops selling similar items appear congregated in specific areas so if you are looking for anything in particular you just have to head for the shopping district associated with that product. You can easily spend a whole day looking through the many fashion shops, designer stores, boutiques, music shops, jewelry shops and bookshops.

Oxford Street And Knightsbridge

This is where you will find many of the nations flagship department stores. Oxford street has the likes of Selfridges and Knightsbridge has the famous Harrods and also Harvey Nichols. Oxford Street is said to be the busiest shopping street in Europe.

Bond Street

Bond Street, in Mayfair, has some of the most expensive shops in London. If you want elegance this is the place to visit it has more shops supplying the Royal Family (Royal Warrant holders) than any other London shopping area. Think Gucci and Armani and you have a rough idea of what to expect.

Covent Garden

Bond Street is great if you are rich and famous but for ordinary folk Covent Garden is the best place to go for fashion clothing. Covent Garden is home to a large number of smaller independent fashion stores and boutiques and this is the place to go if you are in search of a decent pair of shoes.

Other Places In London To Go Shopping

Covent Garden is great for clothes but you may also want to visit the famous Carnaby Street which is becoming popular again. If you want bespoke tailoring then Savile Row is the most famous place to go but look around Piccadilly, especially on Jermyn Street. If you are looking for jewellery but cannot afford Bond Street try Hatton Garden (near Farringdon) which has many long established jewellers to choose from. Books are best found on the Charing Cross Road but also look around Covent Garden.

London has lots more places in which to go shopping and the above list is not comprehensive, there are simply too many. Other places to go shopping, especially for unusual items, are the many London markets, too many to list here.
