Treatment Procedures For Producing Successful Breast Reduction In Males

When a male’s mammary glands become too developed, giving him large breasts, he is said to have a condition called gynecomastia. In fact, about 40% to 50% males suffer from this type of condition, which is also commonly termed as “man boobs.” For them, this is a very embarrassing as well as a very uncomfortable situation.

During the puberty years of a boy, his breasts develop as his body develops. The development of the male breasts though stops at some point. On the other hand, there are some cases wherein the breasts continue to develop.

There are several theories as to the cause of male breast enlargement. One factor that causes gynecomastia is an imbalance in two hormones – the estrogen and the testosterone. Other factors that contribute to gynecomastia are heredity and endocrine dysfunction as well as the use of medications such as antihypertensive drugs. It has also been found out that steroids can cause gynecomastia.

Males who appear to have breasts only have extra fat on their flabby chests. However, the condition is called pseudogynecomastia and is likely to go away with the correct diet and exercise. For pseudogynecomastia that does not go away with working out and dieting, he may need to undergo a special procedure. However, there are special procedures though that can treat true gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia, and these are very effective in reducing the size of the male breasts.

These special procedures include surgery as well as liposuction. It is not uncommon, too, to combine the two procedures. Exercise and diet will not help them reduce their breast sizes if they are diagnosed with either gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia. Removal of the glandular tissues via an incision performed by a surgeon or liposuction of the excess fat is then necessary. The surgical procedure is two-pronged as it is reconstructive surgery and at the same time an exploratory surgery to rule out tumors or lesions in the chest.

Individuals who are obese need to lose some weight before undergoing gynecomastia surgery. It is also recommended that the patient is very healthy before being considered for the procedure.
